Mastin Moor is a brand new secure facility for Turning Point, the UK’s leading social care organization, to provide rehabilitation services for people with complex needs.
The scheme provides for 2 separate adjoining blocks for Female and Male patients, utilizing the natural slope of the site to define the 2 areas on a change of levels with a corridor linking the 2 areas.
Visually the scheme is interesting with two contrasting types of facing brickwork, stained boarding and detailed fenestration including Auriol windows. Externally the design includes for 2 court yards and surrounding landscaped areas.
The development of the project and building is specific to a 14 bed female unit adjoining to a 14 bed male unit with independent living quarters. The construction of this project comprises of extensive excavations with major constructed retaining walls allowing for the change in levels, new drainage scheme linked to the main sewer in the highway, all new incoming services.
The structure consists of a ring beam footing block and beam floors incorporating a Radon gas membrane, the walls are a designed SIP’s system throughout with a timber 1st floor. A traditional timber truss roof over lined with ply wood and a zinc roof covering with the installation of specified roof lights. Other flat roof areas have a build up of single ply and a green roof system, this building also has two internal hydraulic lifts.
The external facades are a mix of brickwork, cladding and a timber clad system with secure by design aluminium windows. Internally there is a full M & E installation with under floor heating and all fixtures and fittings have to comply with ant ligature guidelines. All areas will be designed to impact resistant and incorporating secure meeting, interview and family areas.
External landscapes will be in keeping with all surrounding areas adjacent to the community gardens.
This project is aiming for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
